How to get to Oakland
- From points EAST (Philadelphia, Harrisburg)
via the Pennsylvania Turnpike
- From points WEST (Ohio, Pittsburgh International Airport)
via the Ohio Turnpike and Route 60
- From points SOUTH (Washington, PA; West Virginia)
via I-79 North
- From points NORTH (Erie, western New York)
via I-79 South
- From the NORTHEAST (Route 28)

From points east
- From the Pennsylvania Turnpike, take Exit 57 (old Exit 6-Pittsburgh-Monroeville exit) to I-376 West, take Exit 3B (Old Exit 7A-Oakland-Bates Street exit).
- At the first stoplight on Bates Street, turn left onto Boulevard of the Allies.
- At the first stoplight on Boulevard of the Allies, turn right onto Halket Street (you will be at the Best Western Hotel).
- At the first stoplight on Halket Street, turn right onto Forbes Avenue (a one-way street).
- Follow Forbes for three blocks; turn left onto Atwood Street.
- Travel one block; turn left onto Fifth Avenue. (Fifth Avenue is a one-way street for all traffic except buses.)
- Take the first possible right turn, onto Lothrop Street.
From points west
- From the Pennsylvania Turnpike, take Exit 10 (old Exit 1A) to Route 60 South
- Follow Route 60 South past the Pittsburgh International Airport to I-279 North.
- Take I-279 North through the Fort Pitt Tunnel, and follow the signs to I-376 East.
- Take Exit 2A (old Exit 5-Forbes Avenue-Oakland exit). You will exit onto Forbes Avenue.
- Continue on Forbes Avenue for six blocks to Atwood Street. Turn left onto Atwood Street.
- Travel one block; turn left onto Fifth Avenue. (Fifth Avenue is a one-way street for all traffic except buses.)
- Take the first possible right turn, onto Lothrop Street.
From points south
- Take I-79 North to Exit 59A (old Exit 14), I-279 North.
- Take I-279 North through the Fort Pitt Tunnel, and follow the signs to I-376 East.
- Take Exit 2A (old Exit 5-Forbes Avenue-Oakland exit). You will exit onto Forbes Avenue.

From points north
- Take I-79 South to I-279 South.
- From I-279 South, take Exit 21 to Pittsburgh.
- Near downtown Pittsburgh, take Exit 59A (old Exit 14) to I-579; follow the signs to Monroeville.
- Take the Forbes Avenue-Oakland exit; do not exit at I-376 East.
- Turn right onto the Forbes Avenue ramp.
- Continue on Forbes Avenue for six blocks to Atwood Street. Turn left onto Atwood Street.
- Travel one block; turn left onto Fifth Avenue. (Fifth Avenue is a one-way street for all traffic except buses.)
- Take the first possible right turn, onto Lothrop Street.
From the northeast
- Take Route 28 South to the Highland Park Bridge. As you cross the bridge, get into the left lane.
- Follow the sign will take you down the ramp toward Washington Boulevard. As you exit the ramp, stay in the right lane.
- Just before the traffic light, veer right onto Washington Boulevard through four traffic signals (about two miles).
- At the fourth traffic light, Washington Boulevard crosses Penn Avenue and becomes Fifth Avenue.
- Follow Fifth Avenue into the Oakland section of Pittsburgh (about two and a half miles).
- At the intersection of Bigelow Boulevard and Fifth Avenue, you will see the Cathedral of Learning (see below), a landmark of the University of Pittsburgh campus.
- From this point, travel five blocks to Lothrop Street. (Fifth Avenue is a one-way street for all traffic except buses.)
